Big Caliente Springs, St. Barbara, California

High up in the Los Padres National Forest lies this hidden gem of a Hot Spring. The pool is really hot – perfect in Winter and will cook you like a lobster in Summer…

Big Caliente Springs, St. Barbara, California. As hot as they come…

Probably the best little Hot Spring in the world that you can reach by car …

After a long and bumpy ride of ca. 1,5 hours from Santa Barbara on a curvy dirt road through the Los Padres National Forest you will reach a rather deserted looking plateau (if you are lucky, sometimes the road is closed due to mudslides).

There is a parking lot and a primitive changing room and of course the spring itself flowing into a little cement tub.

The magic begins with sunset … you can soak in the very hot pool (around 40° Celsius) and look at a dazzling sky with glittering stars.

The forests around got some great hiking trails and some basic campsites.

It may get crowded on weekends but you might have the springs all to yourself on weekdays.

The silence is overwhelming and nothing beats a hot soak in the dark …

Directions:

From Highway 154 at the San Marcos Pass summit, turn east on East Camino Cielo. Continue for 23 miles to Pendola station. Just beyond the station, turn north on Rd. 5N16 and follow for 3 miles to the picnic area.
